Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s most iconic safari destination and one of the greatest wildlife areas in Africa. Famous for its vast open plains, extraordinary predator populations and the world-renowned Great Migration, the Serengeti offers unforgettable wildlife experiences throughout the year.
The park is best known for the Great Migration, when enormous herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles move across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. Depending on the season, visitors may witness calving on the southern plains, large herds moving through the western corridor, or dramatic river crossings in the north.
The Seronera Valley in central Serengeti is one of the park’s most reliable wildlife-viewing areas. Its permanent water sources attract lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and many other species throughout the year.
The western Serengeti is shaped by the Grumeti River, while the northern sector is famous for the Mara River crossings, where migrating herds face powerful currents and crocodiles during one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles.
Serengeti is also one of Africa’s best places for observing predators. Lions are commonly seen across the plains, while cheetahs thrive in open grasslands and leopards are frequently found around riverine forests and rocky kopjes.
Beyond the Great Migration, the Serengeti offers exceptional game viewing in every season. Its endless horizons, spectacular sunsets and extraordinary concentration of wildlife make it an essential destination for safari travelers, photographers and nature lovers.
